Megabonk beginner guide
Sources checked Steam store page and API on 20 Oct 2026, plus the character and world pages on Megabonk Wiki and megabonk.org. Per-level percents that those wikis do not share are left out.
Start as Fox (Firestaff, Luck as you level) or Sir Oofie (Sword, Armor as you level). They are the two characters both public rosters list as free from the start.
Your first map is the Forest. Clear waves, pick up XP, and take level-up offers that help the weapon you already have.
Silver is the currency that buys unlocks between runs. Meeting a quest does not put the character in your hands until you purchase it.
CL4NK, the Forest Tier 1 clear, is the usual second character. Desert asks you to take CL4NK to Forest Tier 2, stage 2.
Steam’s own line is the loop: fight hordes on random maps, pick up XP, level up, and take upgrade offers that vary in rarity. The first evening is smaller than the whole unlock list.
First session
- Pick Fox if you want better reward rolls as the run goes on, or Sir Oofie if you want to get hit and stay up. Both are starters on the community rosters.
- Stay in the Forest. The wiki calls the opening enemies simple goblins and says the early Forest is the teaching map.
- Walk over XP. Level-up offers are random. Prefer damage, attack speed, or size on the weapon you are already using before you collect a second toy you cannot aim.
- Break pots that are on your path. They are a Silver and gold source in beginner write-ups. Do not cross the map for one pot while a wave is on you.
- When you die, open the Unlocks tab and spend Silver on whatever the run just qualified. The purchase is part of the unlock.
The loop, in one run
- Move. Standing in the swarm is how a Forest run ends, even on Tier 1.
- Level the thing that is already hitting. A new weapon is a gamble until you know the offer pool. The seven starters are listed on Weapons.
- Charge a shrine only if you can hold the circle. Charge Shrines want you to stand still. That is the opposite of the tip above. Use them when the wave is thin. Details are on Shrines.
- Gold spends inside the run. Silver spends after it. Chests and shops use the run’s gold. The Unlocks menu uses Silver. A Silver Tome helps the next character, not the boss in front of you.
What to ignore for a few runs
- A copied “best build.” You do not own those weapons yet.
- Desert and Graveyard. Desert is a CL4NK route. Graveyard arrived with the December 2025 Spooky update and has its own timer.
- Greed Shrines if you are still learning the boss. Community shrine notes say each one adds difficulty for an economic reward.
- Exact damage numbers from a wiki. Two character pages already disagree on several passives. Read the tooltip in your client.
A short ladder
| When | Aim | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Run 1–2 | Finish a Forest stage on Fox or Sir Oofie | Learn XP, offers, and the boss timer |
| Next | Buy the first cheap unlock the menu offers | Silver you do not spend does not change the pool |
| Then | Clear Forest Tier 1 and buy CL4NK | Opens a crit character and, later, Desert |
| After that | Pick one weapon quest you can do on purpose | Revolver (7,500 kills) and Axe (2,000 Sword kills) are the plain grinds |
The character conditions are on Characters. The menu milestones (extra slots, Banish, Skip) are on Unlocks.
Store facts worth knowing before you tinker
Megabonk is a paid single-player game from vedinad, released 18 Sep 2025. On 20 Oct 2026 the US store API price was $9.99. Windows and Linux are listed; Mac is not. The minimum spec on the store page is a joke on purpose (2 GB RAM, 500 MB, “potato”) and still says Windows 10. Full controller support is listed. There is a demo and a soundtrack DLC. None of that changes the first Forest run.
